Live Review: George Clanton 'It Makes The Babies Want To Cry'

2 September 2015 | 1:26 pm | Emma Jones

Previously called 'Mirror Kisses', New York artist George Clanton has changed his name and honed his sound in new single 'It Makes The Babies Want To Cry'.

It's so intriguing what changing a name can mean for an artist. In the case of GEORGE CLANTON, it can mean a whole new and improved sound.

Previously going under the name Mirror Kisses, he has taken some appropriate measures in an attempt to be taken more seriously as an artist, including going by his own name now. By doing so, he's honed his sound a bit more and found his strengths - creating solid synth-pop tunes with a whole lot to give.

Although the title is quite misleading compared to the 80's-esque, Tears For Fears style sounds he's working with, Clanton's 'It Makes The Babies Want To Cry' probably does anything but. Summery, warm and nostalgic, he pays homage to the masters of his favoured bygone era whilst looking forward and taking influence from the likes of Neon Indian or even M83.

Whirring synths, analogue drum pads and filled with the promise that such bright and colourful 80's tunes are about summer, 'It Makes The Babies Want To Cry' is dramatic in Clanton's vocals but really quite carefree and upbeat in it's sound. Considering this is coming from the same person who brought us niche bedroom dream pop, it's an interesting and exciting digression from the New York artist, and one we can't wait to watch as it continues to unfold.

Taken from his upcoming album 100% Electronica, you can be pretty certain about what you can expect to hear from that record. However, George Clanton has surprised us before so here's hoping he keeps the "endless summer" vibes going just a little while longer.
