TOP FIVES: Music Videos w/ Klue & Nick Alexander

21 September 2015 | 12:40 pm | Tom Hutchins

We got both Klue and Alexander to pick out a couple of their favourite clips of all time, which you can watch/read here.

Considering it's a lot easier to get a music video together on a low budget and share it with the world via YouTube, you could say that the quality of clips may have gotten a little worse over the last decade. Luckily it certainly ain't dead, and KLUE is one of many artists who truly care about it's power.

Together with his good friend and Director, Nick Alexander - Klue's latest clip for 'Way I'm Lovin' You' depicts a summer with a difference, and illustrates the personal connection between artist, song and video. Something that can get lost along the creative assembly line.

We got both Klue and Alexander to pick out a couple of their favourite clips of all time, which you can watch/read below. Plus they've both given accounts of the creative direction behind the 'Way I'm Lovin' You' clip.

KLUE

The Pharcyde 'Drop'

"This clip looks so surreal, because they filmed the whole thing in reverse in one take. As in they learned to perform the whole song backwards and walked backwards the whole way through. It looks like some serious CGI from the 90's but it's just an genius use of rewind!"

OK Go 'Needing/Getting'

"All of OK Go's clips are insane, always some super clever concept. In this one they built a rally track lined with instruments and drove a car with beaters attached to it through the course to create the sounds in the track. Must watch!"

NICK ALEXANDER

Director, Cinematographer and Editor of 'Way I'm Lovin' You' Video Clip

Massive Attack 'Protection'

"This is my all time favourite music clip. It's really a puzzle to me how they made it, because they break every rule in the book (including gravity). It's seamless and makes so much sense with the music."

Slugabed 'Sex'

"Stop frame animation blows me away. It’s like watching a magic trick for the first time. The concept is so original and well executed that it’s impossible to imagine the film without the music, and the other way around."

Pink Floyd 'The Wall'

"This is a whole movie made to accompany the whole album The Wall. I love the idea of collaborating a film and a music project on such a big scale, and a feature length film is a big canvass to get a lot of creativity across. It’s not for the faint hearted, but it’s a masterpiece in my eyes."

BONUS: About 'Way I'm Lovin You' clip

Nick: "Collaborating with Klue on this clip has been a dream job. We both knew that the clip had to revolve around summer, but the danger was accidentally making it look like an advert for a refreshing soft drink. So I was pretty keen to add some inner-city graffiti in the locations and some level of violence. Hence pillow fighting all over Sydney. When you give someone a pillow and tell them to hit a stranger, it brings out the inner kid in anyone. Loads of our friends get a cameo and it’s great when they watch it and see themselves, close up, in HD and in slow motion, having the best time and the best summer."

Klue: "I was super stoked when Nick said he would do a video for 'Way I'm Lovin' You'. I knew he'd smash it, and he did! It was kind of a perfect situation because that track was inspired by the awesome summer that had just passed (dubbed the Summer of Ruck[us]) which included a bunch of festivals we both went to and some ridiculous good times, so he totally knew where that tune was coming from. I'd seen a bunch of stuff he'd worked on before and it was epic, but we'd never collaborated before this. I'm just finishing the first ever Klue EP at the moment so if I have my way we'll be collabing again soon, hopefully Nick is down!!"
