Projections Of Dance - "An Intersection of Film and Dance"

14 October 2015 | 3:54 pm | Tom Hutchins

6am at the Garage have been working tirelessly on their newest project. They call it PROJECTIONS OF DANCE - and it looks big.

Fellow Australian electronic bloggers, 6am at the Garage have been working tirelessly on their newest project, and finally the rest of us get to enjoy the fruits of their labour. They call it PROJECTIONS OF DANCE - and it looks big.

Projections of Dance is an exploration of electronic music cinema. Born at the intersection of their love for film and dance, the 6am team will present a number of fiction and non-fiction stories that are woven into the framework of electronic music. It'll be hosted at Melbourne's Astor Theatre and will also feature several local DJs/artists before before the film.

To operate monthly, the guys have already dropped their first program, where they will bring Berlin Calling, Shut Up And Play The Hits and Eden to the massive Astor screen. Considering that they say these films "have played an inspirational role in our evolving love of electronic music" - we asked the team to talk us through their choices, as well as offering up a track that compliments each film.

October 20, 9.30pm - Berlin Calling

"The soundtrack to this film, Paul Kalkbrenner’s uniquely titled ‘Berlin Calling’, opened the two of us up to some of our first experiences of German techno. While there may have been a little more aviator sunglass wearing in 2008, to this day it’s an album that holds a special place in our hearts. Emotive and beautifully produced, Kalkbrenner’s work has stood the test of time, and does wonders for the narrative of the film itself. Having seen the film at an open air in Kreuzberg during a personally and musically pivotal time, it seemed right as the kick off for Projections of Dance."

Paul Kalkbrenner 'Azure'

"This track is just one of many on Kalkbrenner’s Berlin Calling album that takes a feels-for-days approach to noughties German techno. The track itself is a journey, and has provided the soundtrack to many of our hungover mornings since the inception of 6am. ‘Azure’ is pensive and thoughtful, but has enough kick to it to make you want to move. It exists somewhere in-between the rest of the electronic music genre, never quite committing to a definition as one thing or another. While it’s nearly impossible to pick one off such a deep and influential album, Azure does for us."

November 24, 9.30pm - Shut Up And Play The Hits

"James Murphy’s LCD Soundsystem played a crucial role in our early experiences of electronic music. Their self-titled debut LP, as well as later works Sound of Silver and This Is Happening, dominated our adolescent lives. We cried together when they left the scene, though memories of an impeccable 2012 Murphy vinyl set are still fresh in our minds. Few other electronic bands have been so integral to our musical development, and as such we saw it as a no brainer for our inaugural Projections of Dance program."

LCD Soundsystem 'I’m Losing My Edge'

"The kind of song that we hope one day defines us as washed up 40-something-never-was musicians. James Murphy’s charm has always come in part from a humorous acknowledgement of his ever slipping relevance, and 'I'm Losing My Edge' is a joyous ode to that harsh reality. When combined with his casual confidence and undeniable musical ability, Murphy’s pensive, sarcastic world view has allowed him to breathe the same rarified air as the biggest personalities in popular culture. Musically engaging, socially aware- '...Losing My Edge' is a masterpiece of contemporary electronica."

December 15, 9.30pm - Eden

"The explosion and crossover of the French house movement was a massive influence for our musical generation. Most commonly taking a half bar loop of unheard disco samples and drum programming worthy of giving any club sound system a run for it’s money, the raw club orientated style swept away the imagination of many producers and club fiends around the world. Eden presents a character who rises to fame in this movement, exploring his run ins with the lifestyle- drugs, alcohol and a dangerous obsession with the music."

Together 'So Much Love To Give'

"Although only being in our formative stages of adolescence when we discovered French dance music, it still had enough energy to make a serious impact on our listening habits. Drawn in by it’s familiar, hooky disco samples and enough sidechain/kick drum to melt your face off, French house took a serious hold on a good portion of our lives. Daft Punk was of course our gateway to this sound, but it was not until we dug deeper that we found Thomas Bangalter’s side label, Roule, and really picked up some gems. This track, which he created with French colleague and influential producer DJ Falcon as ‘Together’ really blew us away, and still does to this day. Sampling 'Love’s Such A Wonderful Thing' by The Real Thing, this 2002 dance music anthem is over 10 mins of pure genius. Try and last the whole way through without smiling, we dare you."
