Artists to Watch in 2016: World Champion

28 December 2015 | 12:50 pm | Amie Mulhearn

Sydney duo World Champion and their refreshing brand of psych-pop are the newest addition to the Future Classic family

Julian Sudek and Will Campion individually are certainly not new kids on the block by any means with Sudek a founding member of Mercy Arms and Campion previously doing his thing for Sydney band Cut Silk and The Chevaliers.

2o15 however saw these guys joining forces to create a really fun new outfit. Cue WORLD CHAMPION a quirky act that has gifted our ears with a refreshing brand of psych-pop. World Champion are also that latest to join tastemakers Future Classic alongside producers Wave Racer, Basenji, & Flight Facilities although these guys fall much closer to the Jagwar Ma end of the FC spectrum.

World Champion despite their infancy have kicked some major goals so far the first being their debut single 'Avocado Galaxy'. The single is a melting pot of psychedelic and electronic but has an overall pop sensibility which has left it stuck on repeat since its birth in early September of this year.

They followed this up with the equally as infectious yet slightly more disco feeling psych anthem 'Shakes'. Both these tracks along with a couple more made up their debut EP Avocado Galaxy released right at the start of December whether on purpose or not easily makes a luscious soundtrack for the summer season.

This seemingly short EP has left us wanting more and definitely really curious about what these guys can do if left to draw out some of those funky layers of  guitar and percussion for just a wee bit longer.

We will definitely be watching out for World Champion come 2016, we're particularly excited for what is in store for World Champion's live show. They'll be closing off the year at Lost Paradise Festival alongside Jamie XX and Jon Hopkins and starting the year with the a slot at the inaugural FBi SMAC Festival and then heading to the NSW Central Coast for Mountain Sounds Festival in February. Keep an eye and an ear out.
