BEATY HEART create tunes that you have to describe as fun. There is always something going on in their music to keep you captivated, and moving, even if it is occasionally moving to an awkward beat. Their latest track ‘Soft Like Clay’ is arguably the greatest instalment to their book of magic.
‘Soft Like Clay’ follows the tried and true tested sound methods of the South London trio, it’s an equation of alt-pop, percussion, and distinctive vocals. There is also this background sound going on that sounds a little like a horn, a little like something synthesized. It conjures images of big and colourful things.

The track was written in some pretty extraneous circumstances. Too broke for proper rehearsal space, they ended up shrouded in the haze of building sites, basements and asbestos. Living on the edge for the sake of art, Beaty Heart were surrounded by earthy colours, dust, bricks and trash, which inspired the “fractious” sounds of ‘Soft Like Clay’.
This is a song about being moulded to meet the expectations of the world around you, particularly for musicians. It reflects the anxieties often felt as they try to do something unique, while meeting the demands of society. On another note you could also apply the lyrics to a toxic relationship where one person fails to accept the other for who they are. It’s a pertinent message in so many ways.
Beaty Heart is releasing their album Till The Tomb on July 29th. You can pre-order it through Caroline Australia.
