Live Review: GL's funk mixtape for modern day lovers

7 July 2016 | 2:25 pm | Staff Writer

With GL's exciting new album, Touch, to be released next week we decided to get the band to take us through some of their favourite modern-day funk escapes.

They may be a "cosmic synth group", but we think GL are very indebted to funk.

The duo's music has spanned a myriad of soundscapes; from the "euphoric dance" of 'Hallucinate', the "vibrant piano chords and groovy beat" of 'Grip', the "Madonna-esque" sounds of 'Number One' - but there is an overarching vibe that just screams groove heavy funk in any/every piece of GL gold.

With that (and their exciting new album, Touch, to be released next week), we decided to get the band to take us through some of their favourite modern-day funk escapes. According to GL, the below playlist is "a mixture of electronic-funk and modern-funk from Aus/NZ and elsewhere." Aka, funk for all the 2016 lovers and clubbers out there.

Inkswel - Rockin' Music Feat. Recloose & Isaac Aesilli

"Great Collaboration between Inkswel, Recloose and Isaac Aesilli. Can't resist good Vocoder action."

Nite-Funk - Don't Play Games

"New DâM-FunK and Nite Jewel collaboration which is, of course, very very good."

The Goods - Nightlife Feat. Bruce Hathcock

"Sydney Duo The Goods have just released their Album/Double EP on Personal Best Records and you really should check it out in full."

Silver Linings - So Good To You

"Love this track from Silver Linings (Benny Badge and Françoise). Can't wait for the album!"

First Touch - 'Beweg Dein Körper'

"First Touch are scarily good. German. Also love everything the label Omega Supreme have ever done."

Broadway Sounds - 'Exclusive Love/Digital Influence'

"Seriously can't get enough of this one from Broadway Sounds. Stick around for the excellent outro."

Psychic Mirrors - 'Island Girl'

"From their debut (concept?) album, Nature of Evil. Older track 'Charlene' is a winner too."

B. Bravo - Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)

"B Bravo with a Talk-Box laden cover of one of Billy Ocean's best."

APSD - 'Homegrown' Feat. Joe Dukie

"APSD are Amin Payne and Sean Deans and this one features Joe Dukie who couldn't sound bad if he tried."

Robbie M - 'Friend'

"Here's an ultra-crusty preview of the Robbie M album 'Friend'. Starts with a nice prologue by Robbie himself. Take his advice and buy it also for a friend!"

Touch will drop July 15th on Midnight Feature/Plastic World via Inertia.
