Live Review: Lonelyspeck will submerse you in ‘All My Skin On The Air’

'All My Skin On The Air' is the new single from Adelaide producer Lonelyspeck, and it's lilting, ambient electronic pop with a smooth R'n'B inflection.

Adelaide producer LONELYSPECK, otherwise known as Sione Teumohenga, is back with new single ‘All My Skin On The Air’, following his 2014 debut EP Presence. It’s the first cut from a new EP expected in February 2017, and if ‘All My Skin…’ is anything to go by, watch this space, because it’ll be one of the most lush releases of the year.

Out on tastemaker label Teef Recordings, home to other great artists like Anatole, Yon Yonson, and Arthur Wimble, the track was crafted from start to finish by Teumonhenga himself. From mixing and mastering to video and album artwork as well, his complete involvement here makes Lonelyspeck a truly personal project. This extends beyond production to thematic concerns too, with tunes based on notions of “identity, fierce emotion, and the vastness of the universe.”

“The concept is that I want to be exposed and not hide my feelings even if they’re awkward or seemingly trivial or whatever. I need to literally let them out or they will fester in me,” Lonelyspeck said.

Exposed he is, with muted harmonies floating on an ambient, mellow groove. There are moments of true minimalism, contrasted with fuller, fuzzier soundscapes. Basic percussion lays a platform for some more eclectic sampling, with some excellent, muffled, psych-rock style guitars in the breakdown that really should have been utilised a little more on this track. There’s a definite Frank Ocean influence to Lonelyspeck’s work, particularly in the beautiful R’n’B vocals which carry the emotional weight of the tune.

‘All My Skin…’ is quite the sensory experience, with wonderfully layered textures throughout. It’s slightly unorthodox, but remains accessible - lush, ambient, experimental pop that’ll render you hypnotised.
