Artists to Watch in 2017: Confidence Man

6 January 2017 | 7:30 am | Ted Dwyer

I couldn't be more confident that Confidence Man will become the grooviest kids on the block in 2017 and keep the sass well and truly flowing.

Infectious is a word that gets thrown around a lot in the music world, and I usually do my best to avoid using it for fear of overusing clichés, but ever since I first heard ‘Boyfriend (Repeat)’, I haven’t been able to get CONFIDENCE MAN’s hooks out of my brain. It’s the definition of infectious, and it’s only their first single, so it’s with good reason that they’re one of our Artists to Watch in 2017.

Hailing from Brisvegas, where they’ll be taking the stage at Laneway on January 26 to cap off a meteoritic rise in late 2016, this four piece features members of several other great Aussie outfits - The Belligerents, Moses Gunn Collective, and The Jungle Giants. But like true con artists, their actual identities remain closely guarded. Nonetheless, Confidence Man's experience shines through in a truly confident style of music, overflowing with funky grooves, bouncy drums, and awesome spoken word vocals. Buckets of sass and subtle humour and an obvious knack for crafting a breakdown make for tunes that are honestly just a total party.

They’ve just wrapped up a national tour for ‘Boyfriend (Repeat)’, including several dates supporting Chairlift (!!!), and a number of festival slots at the likes of The Plot and Jungle Love. In early 2017, they’ll be rocking Laneway in Brisbane, a festival called PANAMA in Tasmania, and Golden Plains and By The Meadow in Victoria. It seems word spreads pretty quickly for Confidence Man, and for obviously very good reason!
