Live Review: Lakim takes on Plaza in a booming remix of 'Personal'

13 March 2017 | 8:24 am | Aiden Benavides

LAKIM from the ever talented Soulection has remixed the track 'Personal' by Toronto native Plaza who has been making waves the the local Toronto R&B scene.

From the ever talented Soulection crew, LAKIM is one exciting producer, and now we have another shining example of why. Stepping up for remix duties, he has recently dropped a rework of Plaza's 'Personal', a Toronto artist making his own waves in the RnB scene recently.

Lakim brings a new fresh take to the production of 'Personal', while keeping Plaza's vocals mostly in tact. Focused around on the heavy kick drums pounding while the pulsing synths take a backseat, the amount of low end sounds on the remix compared to the original is substantial, keeping it in line with that bassy vibe Soulection is known for. Cramming a whole lot of sounds in his remix, Lakim really shows us what he's made of here.

The original track takes in multiple instruments along side heavy use of reverb and Plaza's vocal performance. Converting it to a cleaner, more dance styled bass track seemed to be Lakim's goal, and in every way he's achieved this.

The vocal performance by Plaza deserves a mention as it remains a dynamic stand out performance on both versions of the song. Plaza's voice links the two versions together and in both, and his voice grounds the production and transforms it from more than just a cool beat into a fully fledged song.

Lakim has done well with this remix, keeping the vocals mostly untouched and building a booming beat around it. We hope to hear more from both artists soon.
