Live Review: PREMIERE: Janeva shows us wreckless love in 'You & I' video

Janeva's new track 'You & I' has been getting a lot of love. Now we have a visual that adds another layer of depth to the already emotional track.

Melbourne's JANEVA is on a roll lately. She's been a featured vocalist for DUGONG JR and LONDON TOPAZ in the past and recently supported RUNNING TOUCH for his hometown gig, but her new solo release has been getting a lot of love. Her track 'You & I', along with being featured here by us, has been doing the rounds on the j's, both Triple and Unearthed. Now we have a visual to go with the tune that adds another layer of depth to the already emotional track.

As a song, 'You & I' is a gorgeous electronic RnB track, that really shows the emotion JANEVA can achieve with just her vocal delivery. The production is fluid, moving from half tempo classic RnB to a more energetic synth driven bop and and back again. Her voice works in tandem with the production, commanding when the syncopated chords hit in the chorus and subdued but strong in the verses.

The video, directed by Kris Small, shows JANEVA out and about with her lover. We're right beside them at the fair, the beach, with pals having kick ons and getting food, and witnessing sweet little gestures and intimate moments between the two. This is undercut by the content of the lyrics, wistfully reminiscing on a relationship that has already ended, and the video becomes bittersweet.

Shot on an old school Super 8 camera, the washed out fuzziness of the footage feels makes the clip feel like an extended flashback. Of course the track is mourning the end of a relationship, and the song and video doesn't let up with the feels. We see JANEVA laughing and grinning widely in almost every shot blissfully unaware of the song's truths.

As an extension of the themes the song explores, this video is a perfect accompaniment contrasting the joy of what we're seeing to the soulful yearning track. Again, this is a strong debut release and a strong vision from this young artist and hopefully we get to see more of this vision unfold later this year.
