The Kite String Tangle reveals his must-have items for going on tour

12 September 2017 | 8:35 am | Julia Insolia

We spoke to The Kite String Tangle to ask him what his five tour essentials are, so he doesn't go crazy while touring.

Every artist knows the struggles of going on tour, having to make every foreign city your new home for a night or two, and packing the absolute minimum while still being able to have your life essentials with you. The Kite String Tangle is no stranger to this, currently touring with American electronic duo ODESZA, and getting ready to embark on his own tour across Australia.

Having just released his long awaited debut album, The Kite String Tangle has been popping up everywhere. Not only is he now the head of his own label, he also performed a highlight set at Splendour In The Grass as well as a handful of sold out shows earlier this year. With his own tour ahead of him as well as a growing number of festival appearances, it seems he's going to be on the road a lot for the rest of the year, so we asked him what he must have with him to keep him sane and get him through.

  1. Bluetooth Speaker

A good Bluetooth speaker is so handy to have. You’d be amazed how many places you have to wait around on tour, so having a portable speaker that gets a party started is awesome. Great for hotel rooms, green rooms and parks. If I lost mine, I’d immediately buy another one.

  1. Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3

One of my management team recently showed me that you can buy a cheap $30 knock off playstation controller and download free emulations of playstation games. This is my new way to pass time on planes and long car trips. Usually my laptop gets passed round the car to see who can get the highest score in Tony Hawks. Crash Bandicoot also gets an honourable mention.

  1. Vitamins

Gotta treat your body well on tour, because you’ll also be making it your bitch. Forever trying to find the balance.

  1. Exercise Gear

I always take my running gear in case I miraculously feel great one morning and decide to go for a run in foreign place. Look, it doesn’t happen often but it has happened. I always take it regardless because I like to be optimistic about my self-motivation.

  1. Plane invisibility gear (headphones, hat and sunglasses)

This is ideal for when you’re feeling less than ideal, usually heading home after a show or at the end of a tour, and you’re wondering, "Is this gon be forever?" If nobody can see your eyes and you can’t hear anybody, then you’re kind of in separate worlds, right? Now all that’s left to do is battle the person next to you for the arm rest... get in early and don’t back down.
