Live Review: Milwaukee Banks and Sophiegrophy turn up in 'Lights Down' video

19 October 2017 | 8:11 am | Molly McLaughlin

'Lights Out' is accompanied by a video straight out of the 90s and a 'f*ck the haters' vibe, and is somehow both chill and danceable.

Melbourne electro-hip hop duo MILWAUKEE BANKS have well and truly met their match in up-and-comer SOPHIEGROPHY on their latest tune 'Lights Out'. A groovy party jam, 'Lights Out' is accompanied by a video straight out of the 90s and a 'fuck the haters' vibe.

'Lights Down' sounds like a party soundtracked by an old-school video game, with melodic synths and a slick drum beat. The production is minimalist but effective, allowing Sophiegrophy and Dyl Thomas (one half of Milwaukee Banks, alongside producer Edo) to shine on their respective verses. Sophiegrophy's voice is confident and versatile, switching from sass to serenade with ease. It is somehow both chill and danceable, as appropriate for 3 pm or 3 am.

The video is an goddamn delight, from Sophie and Dyl's moves to the amazing back up dancers to the changing pastel background.  The video, like the track, doesn't take itself too seriously. It is a purely fun tune with no pretension, dedicated to dancing however you feel like and drinking more than is sensible.

While Milwaukee Banks' previous work has been more focused on the shadows, it is refreshing to hear a lighter side from these boys, proving they really can do it all (with more than a little help from Sophiegrophy). We bet you'll be spinning this one at your next afterparty.
