Live Review: Kira Puru is back with the groovy yet powerful 'Tension'

6 November 2017 | 8:18 am | Max Lewis

Kira Puru is back with 'Tension', a minimal, powerful yet contagiously groovy 'goth-disco' bop that shows the genre-defying artist has still got it.

It's been a long time coming, but Melbourne artist KIRA PURU is finally back with 'Tension' - her first solo single since 2015, and a 'goth-disco' banger.

Bursting on the scene with 2015's 'All Dulled Out', Kira Puru has since joined forces with Urthboy at Splendour in the Grass and Triple J's One Night Stand in 2016, as well as helping him support Midnight Oil last month. Having collaborated with IllyUrthboy and Paul Kelly in the past, she also featured on Yeo's track 'Three Dots.' Renowned for her genre-bending style and explosive live shows, Kira Puru's latest track shows an evolution we can't wait to see more of.

'Tension' shows a heavier vibe we've yet to see from Kira, with a pounding four-to-the-floor beat, fuzzy bass and tremolo guitar giving off a dance-punk vibe reminiscent of LCD Soundsystem. The chorus is where the track truly shines, morphing into a funk-filled soulful hook with the vocals laying out the titular hook while the groovy-as-hell disco sound gets the full treatment. While the pre-chorus and bridge give little electronic teases with some rising synths, the track remains rather minimal and raw, focusing instead on the sheer power of the bass melody and Kira's vocal prowess.

'Goth-disco' is honestly the best way to describe the sound - its darker and angrier tones are offset nicely with the peppy percussion and smooth bass. 'Tension' shows Kira Puru coming into her own as an artist, displaying the evolution of her sound so unique you have to make up a whole genre to do it justice.
