Musica Copa announces its return for 2017

10 November 2017 | 10:11 am | Emma Jones

As the countdown to EMC continues clocking down the days, there is one event we are particularly excited for. The day where some of the music industry's most respected communities, business and more come together for a bit of friendly fire on the soccer field, all in the name of charity. That's right, MUSICA COPA is back for another year!

Celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, Musica Copa has become one of the key highlights of EMC each year; after a few days of elbow rubbing, networking and too many beers at the conference and EMCPlay, what better way to let off some steam than to verse your competing companies in a bit of 5-a-side soccer, and raise some money for some charities as well? And it's not just a few gold coins they're raising either, as all up Musica Copa has raised over $40,000 for charity over the years. Just last year, winners Lucky Ent took home $7000 for their charity The Reach Foundation, while runners-up Universal Music secured $3000 for Musicians Making A Difference. The stakes will be just as high this year, thanks to generous contributions from our teams and partners Nike, Tito’s Vodka, Heineken, DJ Warehouse, Mary’s Burgers and Recovery Water.

Now, to who's playing. Over the past five years, the likes of members of Flight Facilities, The Rubens, DMAs, Motez, Montaigne, What So Not, Nina Las Vegas and many more have all dusted off their footy boots and taken to the field, and this year will be no different. Reputable names such as Future ClassicI OH YOUInertiainthemixSonyUniversal MusicFBi RadioUNDR CtrlWMESpotifySelect Music and loads more will all have teams playing in this year's comp, with the draw to be announced very soon.

Helmed by UNDR Ctrl's Paul Stix and Purple Sneakers'/Boundary Sounds' Martin Novosel, it's exciting to see such a special event reach its five year milestone. Speaking of the hard work they've put in, Stix said "For many people in the music industry (including myself), Musica Copa has become one of the favourite events on the annual calendar. It’s a nice milestone to get to 5 years, and Martin and I are really excited to welcome new teams Spotify, Nike All Stars, Of Leisure and Inertia Music to the tournament. We’re introducing 2 divisions for the first time this year and an improved open mixed team format to encourage even more female players this year. We’re humbled by the support Musica Copa receives from our industry friends, and we hope to raise as much money as we can for this year’s wonderful charities"

With a couple of new changes in the mix this year including the introduction of a second division (one for elite players, and one for the more social side of the sport), as well as a new rule to promote gender equality in that it is now required that 2 of the 4 outfield players on pitch at any time must be female - with each 8 player-squad having a mandatory minimum of 3 female players (with more encouraged of course!), Musica Copa continues to strive for it to be an event for all.

As always, there will be an after party to celebrate the day as well, with more news on that just around the corner, but for now, you can head HERE to check out the list of charities and see below for a recap of past years to get you really excited. See you on the field!
