Artists to Watch in 2018: Muki

29 December 2017 | 10:13 am | Caitlin Medcalf

Sydney-based sass queen MUKI has had a meteoric year solidifying herself as not only an artist to watch, but a pop force to be reckoned with.

She exploded onto the scene with her debut single 'Sassaparilla' - a PC Music inspired pop anthem that ticks all of the boxes: her vocals are strong, the production is quirky and energising and the entire song in its totality is just a damn good pop song.

It's hard to believe it's been less than a year in action for this dynamo, but she's accomplished so much in that short time. Working with US producer Aaron Reyes to replicate and jam to some epic synthetic sounds, the production and feel of her sound is such a massive part of her identity as an artist.

'Sassaparilla' is high energy, bubblegum pop at its best. It brought fresh sounds that are reminiscent of SOPHIE to the table and in the process, she began to generate some hype.

'Friends Don't Make Out' was her second single, and in the same way that 'Sassaparilla' was an instant favourite, so too was this single. It steps more into pop territory, but it definitely works hard to highlight what Muki is essentially great at, and that's writing pop music.

She went on tour earlier this year with Client Liaison and Paces, collaborated with Tigerilla, released a film clip for 'Sassaparilla' and best of all, made a bunch of solid pals along the way.

It's unsure of what we can expect from Muki in 2018, but if anything's certain, it will be exciting, fresh and captivating. I'm holding out for 2018 because it's going to be Muki's year, and there's nothing anyone can do to stop her momentum.
