Live Review: Soothsayer and CC:DISCO! join forces for new compilation, kick off with fresh Jace XL cut

Soothsayer and CC:DISCO! have teamed up for 'First Light: Volume 1' - set to feature the finest AUNZ tunes - and dropped the first taste courtesy of Jace XL

Melbourne label SOOTHSAYER have just announced they're teaming up with club mainstay CC:DISCO! for a massive compilation titled First Light: Volume 1. They've dropped the first taste of the series in the form of 'Really Want That' by JACE XL - a funky retro mish-mash with plenty of good vibes.

CC:DISCO! and Soothsayer have partnered plenty of times over the label's two year lifespan, with First Light being the latest and biggest collaboration to date. The series aims to showcase all the best tracks from Australia and New Zealand's local scenes, giving music lovers everywhere the chance to get down with underground artists they may not have heard of.

Jace XL's 'Really Want That' is a great sample of the kind of music we can expect from First Light. Blending soul, jazz and electronica, it sounds like it belongs in a club as much as it does in a hazy bar. Jace's vocals have immense presence, switching between Prince-esque harshness and effortless falsetto often within the same breath. It's really the element that ties the track together - among the live saxophone, drum machines and warm keys, its what bridges the otherwise different styles together into a cohesive whole. If 'Really Want That' is the kind of quality we can expect from First Light, we're pleased as punch.
