Live Review: Roland Tings teams up with HIGH HØØPS for 'One Hundred'
Melbourne house producer, ROLAND TINGS, continues in the vein of his latest album Each Moment a Diamond for his new single ‘One Hundred’ with New Zealand’s HIGH HØØPS on the vocals. Warm and summery, it’s an elegant and nuanced four minutes, made up of layers of retro-sounding synths, dance-y lazer zaps and groovy melodies. These converge effortlessly over HIGH HØØPS’ dusky singing.
Tings wanted to create something true to the sounds and smells of the coast with this track, something he's not done before. “This song came about following a move from the city to the coast,” says Tings. “I spent summer driving around winding cliffs and swimming in the ocean...When I heard a DJ in Auckland play a song by HIGH HØØPS I immediately knew that he was the right fit for what I had in mind. We got in touch and the track came together effortlessly.”
Indeed, HIGH HØØPS’ singing complements the song's chill atmosphere perfectly. His breathy, seductive lyrics communicate a soft intimacy, all the while injecting the song with an infectious energy. The line, “Feeling like I’m on 99 / What can I do to give you one hundred,” acts as the song's anchor. You never tire of hearing it sung despite it getting repeated over and over again throughout.
There’s a synthy solo around the 1:30 minute mark which sounds great, as does the buildup and drop near the track's end. Here, the song's disparate sounds cascade and collide, pausing for a brief moment of silence before exploding back into the song's familiar, infectious groove. Tings' production here is understated yet powerful.

‘One Hundred’ is perfect for listening to on the couch, at the coast or at home, but it’s equally suited to late-night basement raves and dance rooms. Some parts are quite a bit more dance-y than house, although for the most part, this song is made up of groovy, retro-sounding beats, as well as fluorescent synth melodies and disco-tinged effects. It's definitely a song for everyone and for almost any occasion.
Roland Tings will soon head to Perth to play Geisha Club as part of his national DJ tour, before crossing back to perform shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide and wrapping up in the Central Coast.
