Just A Gent dishes on Maitland's delightfully humble hotspots

30 May 2018 | 3:49 pm | Jackson Langford

With great humility and even greater charm, Just A Gent takes us through his personal highlights of his hometown of Maitland.

JUST A GENT has been a very busy man lately. Between dropping an absolutely massive collab with Thandi Phoenix, 'Space Odyssey', and currently on his nationwide 'Just A Tour' tour, it might be easy to believe that his new heights would make him forget his hometown.

However, with great humility and even greater charm, Just A Gent takes us through his personal highlights of his hometown of Maitland. "Ah, Maitland, the city of dreams," he said. "With a population of about 80 000 folks it's actually becoming a bit of a hotspot. I have lived in Maito my whole life, moving house about 15 times (thanks to my parents lovely hobby that is flipping houses) we somehow never managed to leave Maitland. Which I have no problem with as it’s a pretty dope place."

Reading Cinemas Maitland

"Here we have Reading Cinemas Maitland. Now, this may look like your average cinema but its not. It’s had some sleek renos over the past few years and best of all right next door you can grab a doner kebab from one of the greatest kebab joints of all time ‘Mustafas’.

My girlfriend and I attend the cinemas at least once a week generally hitting up Mustafas before hand. $10 a ticket how can you go wrong."

The Morpeth Bridge

"A classic. Pretty sure this is one of the first bridges in the country. Kids jump off it quite often, not sure if it's exactly safe or not but they do it anyway. Can’t say I’ve ever done it but it's nice to drive over or you can just have a picnic next to it and enjoy the sights."

The Belmore Hotel

"The Belly is probably the closest thing Maitland has to a nightclub these days. Can’t say its the best clubbing experience you will ever have but they do have a pretty decent schnitty that you can devour. $11.50 schnittys are on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays so that is my recommended time to drop by."

Greenhills Shopping Centre

"Damn, that concept design tho. Well it’s actually finished now and looks just like it, very fancy, very slick and lots of shops. I’m not much of a shopper however they have a lot of good food at g hills so it’s worth the visit. My girlfriend also works at David Jones so stop by and say hey."

Maitland Regional Art Gallery

"This is where I got the inspiration for my track Art Department. Pretty dope spot, lots of cool exhibits every month and they have a great cafe as well (would recommend the milkshakes)."

The Art Department (my studio)

"Yeah, I still live in Maitland. It’s just too good not to stay. I don’t get a whole lot of visitors though so if you are ever in the area just hmu. I have a bunch of board games and VR so plenty of things to do.

All in all, Maitland isn’t the most popping place in the world. But it’s home and I love it."
