Live Review: NUSSY's synth-pop magic will make you 'Tremble'

11 May 2018 | 10:05 am | Max Lewis

After a brief respite from music Melbourne's NUSSY is back and better than ever on 'Tremble', a glittery synth-pop ode to dance floor attraction.

After a vocal fold surgery took her out of commission for a few months, Melbourne synth-pop artist NUSSY has returned with a vengeance in her new single 'Tremble', showing the world that not even benign cysts can slow her magic down.

Since her self-titled EP way back in 2014, NUSSY has been refining her sugary-sweet synth-pop sound, a delightful throwback to neon slicked 80s goodness with a slice of modern pop sensibilities; everything I could ever ask for in a song. Her previous track, 'Hard as Diamonds', brought this gloomy, glittery sound into the limelight, cementing NUSSY as a force to be reckoned with in Australia's electro-pop world.

'Tremble' stands up as her best work yet; an ethereal and sultry tale of mutual attraction told through warm synths and layers of warped vocals. The track initially reminded me of Love You to Death era Tegan and Sara what with the harmonies and thick retro sound, but NUSSY quickly makes it her own with a solid ear-worm hook and simple but strong lyrics. She knows what it wants to do (make a perfect pop ditty) and she does it perfectly.

On top of all this, its hugely impressive how 'Tremble' sets up an atmosphere of sexual tension and desire in the midst of a bustling night out. The mix is frantic with contemplative synth progressions and the percussion booms in the low-end, simulating the four-to-the-floor vibe of a club without stepping on NUSSY's synth-pop sensibilities. With some stellar production, songwriting, and vocals as good as they've ever been , 'Tremble' truly sets Nussy apart from the rest, proving no matter how hard you get knocked down, you can definitely get back up. Nussy is also playing some dates in Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane - check out the dates below!
