Live Review: Winston Surfshirt gets the Mookhi treatment on her lush remix of 'FreeForYou'

Winston Surfshirt have dropped an 8-track remix EP of their debut album, including a monumentally lush remix from Sydney producer Mookhi.

Sydney six-piece WINSTON SURFSHIRT have announced an 8 track remix EP of their monumental debut Sponge Cake. Among remixes from greats like Roy Davis JrSampology and Karizma stands a stunning remix from Sydney producer MOOKHI, who turns the already chill cut 'FreeForYou' into a lush and densely-packed jam.

The remix EP, titled Sponge Cake Rebaked, drops ahead of Winston Surfshirt's tour of the EU & UK that kicks off on May 17th. It comes after two sold out tours of Australia, spots at Splendour in the Grass and Groovin' the Moo, and even a shoutout from Elton John, after their debut captivated the globe with it's uniquely chill Northern Beaches sound. Mookhi's remix injects this vibe with her own production formula, and the results are impressive to say the least.

On the 'FreeForYou' remix, Mookhi writes, "I had to have two cracks at this as I was pretty overwhelmed to remix an already lush song [...]  felt I flipped FreeForYou until I got the sound right." The intro soundscapes sees her taking this literally as we hear a bushwalker flip a cassette playing the original track over to Side B, which instantly erupts in a massive wall of thick bass and crashing percussion. The minimal and groovy style of the original is all here, but it's been amplified and enhanced with Mookhi's trademark trumpet accompaniment fitting the track like a warm pair of socks.

It's a veritable wall of sound you can absolutely get lost in, highlighting both Mookhi's immense talent as a producer, and the skill of Winston Surfshirt in that their music is still chill as hell no matter what you do with it. A remix EP is the perfect thing to tide fans over until the sextet's sophomore album, which is sure to take over the world.
