Live Review: Feel the melancholy love in GRAACE's 'Kissing Boys' music video
GRAACE's peppy 80's inspired piano ballad 'Kissing Boys' gets a video to match, linking the hidden heartbreak of the song with heartfelt visuals.
21-year-old singer-songwriter GRAACE sure did set herself up well for her debut single 'Kissing Boys', collaborating with HAYDEN JAMES on a track that shot her into the Hottest 100 and landing a touring slot with FLIGHT FACILITIES on their national tour months before it had even dropped! Now, following its release, we get another taste of her vision in the form of the track's music video, matching the hidden heartbreak of the song with heartfelt visuals.
'Kissing Boys' is pop at it's purest, delivering a twist on a piano ballad with the help of bright 80's inspired production. Of course the shining star of the whole track is GRAACE herself, distilling the complicated emotions following the end of a relationship into earworm lyrics and delivering them with a delicate strength. The track hides its melancholy under intoxicating synth tones, hearty piano chords and vibrant delivery, and the accompanying visuals drive home this emotional bait and switch.
Director of the clip Sejon Im, who's worked with Sydney acts like Cosmo's Midnight and Slim Set, lends his eye for grand landscapes and emotive visual storytelling to the track. The video sees GRAACE and her boo under the haze of VHS grain, giving us a peek into private, tender moments between the couple. They traverse the ups and downs of being together, ups like exploring the Aussie bush and drinking wine, and downs such as their inability to carry food items without dropping them. But under the lyrics of the song, the moments become bittersweet and twist into a best-of reel of her own memories, of what she had and took for granted.

The release of this video really emphasises the sneaky gut punch of the lyrics, with GRAACE knocking it out of the park in this stunning debut release that packs complex emotions into a wistful pop tune. She's been picked as one of the artists at this year's Bigsound, and we can't wait to see what else she's got in store for us there.
