Live Review: Clairo's latest offering is a slice of pop ‘Heaven’

11 September 2018 | 10:04 am | Andrea Delos Santos

Clairo makes the everyday sparkle with her hazy, lo-fi bedroom pop once again on 'Heaven', taken from the Skate Kitchen soundtrack.

After piquing the internet’s curiosity with her endearing video for ‘Pretty Girl’, CLAIRO has continued to charm our ears with her delightful pop gems. It wouldn’t be a Clairo track without those underlying hints of hazy bedroom-pop and her latest offering, ‘Heaven’, definitely doesn’t disappoint in that department.

This is the first single released from the upcoming Skate Kitchen (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), a film that follows a New York-based all-girl skate crew under the same name. The accompanying music video features members of the film including JADEN SMITH, and sees Clairo wistfully watching the girls skate from the outskirts of the park before grabbing her own board and joining them herself.

This track follows the EP diary 001, straying slightly from the R&B sounds of her debut and entering a lo-fi and ethereal soundscape. It’s a ballad about teenage awkwardness and longing, soaked in hypnotic, shimmering synths that at first listen, evoke visions of the initial shyness that come with slow dances at your high-school formal. It encapsulates the anxieties and butterflies that form when making new friends and is a gentle ode to all the wallflowers of the world. It's another shining example of how special Clairo is as she continues to make the everyday and the mundane sparkle.
