Melbourne-based electronic producer ATALEIN, also known as Laura Hopkins, is one artist who has found her legs in electronic production after first evolving her classical music roots. Originally trained as a pianist, Hopkins has now released her debut single ‘Autumn / Winter’, a track that was inspired by her travels through Europe last year and is definitely, definitely not classical music.

That being said, ‘Autumn / Winter’ still maintains some old-school compositional structuring in the sense that it has a clear crescendo as the song progresses, building in intensity as new elements are added. Stark, gnawing bass synths contrast wonderfully with Hopkins’ soft, echoing vocals and at it’s apex the song is a bubbling potion of industrial, electronic drums, echoes and glitches. The artist explains that the song is about exploring the need to let go of the expectations placed upon her by herself and others. It was premiered at this years Fringe Festival in Melbourne to critical acclaim, it’s very cool and now the artist has unveiled a very cool video to match!

Directed by Rob La Terra, the video for ‘Autumn / Winter’ draws upon the literary symbolism of the track’s title, embarking on a lucid journey through seasons of oppression and self discovery, as Atalein quite literally sheds her skin to become reborn. The pairing of props symbolising innocence with the biologically obscure create a great visual representation of the song itself and the message the artist is trying to convey about battling through painful situations with the simplest longing to feel like your true self.

This is a truly exciting debut from another great emerging artist and as Atalein plans to embark on another Euro-trip very soon, there’s no telling what she will come back with next time.
