Artists to Watch in 2019: Donatachi

2 January 2019 | 7:49 pm | Michael Stratford Hutch

The last few years have seen the international pop music landscape shift dramatically. An exciting underground of visceral, alternative pop has risen, spearheaded by the likes of Charli XCX and PC Music, to meet the demands of those wanting a harder, faster, almost hyperreal flavour of verse-chorus bangers.

Enter DONATACHI, an independent Sydney-based producer with over 1 million streams on Spotify, releases on Sidechains and Good Enuff, and collabs with the likes of Oh Boy, Boy Sim, and Mallrat. Forward-thinking production unites laser-focused samples that glitz and glitch, all wrapped up within positive, sun-drenched energy. A revolving cast of vocalists bounce around in the playful and prismatic sonic world that Donatachi creates, resulting in a certifiable sugar-rush.

Donatachi released two tracks in 2018, previewing a new body of work that will be released in 2019 as an EP. ‘Precious Metal’, a collaboration with vocalist Rromarin, saw jagged synth jabs and racing vocals entrance the listener. Written at a difficult point in one of Rromarin’s relationships, the lyrics reflect how “we unwittingly destroy the things that we love and treasure the most.”

Building upon this fertile ground came ‘In Love’, a collaboration with Rosebud Leach, a saccharine club track with rubber-band subs, snap-crackle-popping hats and snares, and synth blips that bubble like soda. Reinterpreting classic love songs and taking inspiration from late 80s Janet Jackson, ‘In Love’ takes tired tropes and injects new life into them.

Following on from a summer support-slot for Mallrat, these two singles tease at a stronger, refined direction in Donatachi’s writing and production. Indeed, their forthcoming EP Precious Metal is bound to contain even more great examples of his crystalline production style, keeping collaborative spirits high and dancefloors wanting more. I can only hope that there’ll be a live component to the EP, so I can be on that dancefloor myself.
