Live Review: LO'99 flexes his formula with Owl Eyes on 'Sometimes'

25 January 2019 | 12:51 pm | Holly O'Neill

Sydney producer LO'99 has just kicked off 2019 with a hot collab. Bringing her out of a six year break, he's enlisted OWL EYES to lend her bright clarity to his latest deep house offering 'Sometime', out now on Medium Rare Records. As listenable poolside as it is on the middle of the dancefloor, it's a masterclass in crafting a breezy summer jam without pretence.

'Sometime' builds off a foundational chord progression and Owl Eyes' emotive vocals, but is elevated by thoughtful percussion primed to get you dancing. This chord progression guides the track throughout but with the addition of echoing vocal chops, LO'99's classic heady bass line and a solid four to the floor sprinkled with a touch of 2-step, makes for a house track without snobby pretence.

This collaboration is a perfect match, as Owl Eyes' soars over the deep house grooves. Even chopped beyond recognition in the breakdowns her breathy contribution is the perfect foil to LO'99's fuzzy synths and huge low end, but the two are both linked by a certain musical warmth. Together they've created a track that is infectious and all encompassing, creating a whole world from a four bar loop.
