Live Review: Missed Calls: Genesis Owusu, Leftprojects & more

21 March 2019 | 1:35 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

If you haven’t got the memo yet, we at Purple Sneakers love new music. Each week, we’re graced with a tonne of new releases, and sometimes, it’s a little hard for us to keep up. Which is why we’re answering some of our missed calls and passing the line over to you. Below is a stellar bunch of new music that you might have missed over the last week.

Assembler Code & Jensen Interceptor - DIY Action Cinema

Powerhouse pals ASSEMBLER CODE and JENSEN INTERCEPTOR are no strangers to collaborating with one another. They've put out a bunch of releases together before, but their newest comes to us on Lou Karsh's LKR Records in their Upper Function EP.

The physical release is out, but the label's slowly feeding us tastes of the full tracks via Soundcloud, including this slow-burner 'DIY Action Cinema'. We're funnelled through a vortex of 808's and low wind synths howling lightly underneath the stabby hats. There's a few tinges of acid thrown in for good measure too, and we're left with a tasty treat to make you move.

Kormak - Touch Your Body

He delivered a thumping house mix for us a couple of weeks back, and now Sydney producer KORMAK has returned with a banger of a new track titled 'Touch Your Body', out on Glasgow Underground.

He rounded out 2018 with a club anthem in 'Love On The Line' that's been rinsed in clubs and on your airwaves all across the globe. Kormak's first offering of the year continueshis run of club-ready tracks that grab you by the front of your shirt and command you to dance. This one's pushed forward by the throttle of the top line and the driving nature of the percussion. Definitely another one you'll be hearing on a dancefloor near you sometime soon.

leftprojects - Heaven

It was definitely a summer to remember, particularly for those in range of Sydney's beaches. leftprojects have just put out a new track, 'Heaven', and it's an ode to those times of having a blast and doing everything in your power to remember every little detail in order to retain that feeling.

Of the track, Corry of the duo said “We want people to feel like they’re jumping out of their skin with love for someone, and already imagining themselves later in life, looking back on the best times of their life and being happy for it all. I want people to cry cos they’re sad it’s over, but happy it happened. Smiley crying.”

Out via Exist. Exclusives, the track pairs the voice of Sarah Corry with the beautifully kept sounds of producer Jono Graham for one hell of a future nostalgia anthem. Reminisce on the good times while you soak this one in.

Genesis Owusu - 'WUTD' / 'Vultures'

Kicking off the year with not one, but TWO releases is Canberra's GENESIS OWUSU. After what was a stellar year for the 21 year old, he's backing it up with two track's 'WUTD', a smooth, RnB track I guarantee will never get out of your head and, 'Vultures', a wavy rap journey, as well as a clip for 'WUTD'.

Genesis Owusu personifies 'WUTD' in the clip. He's all charisma in this one, shaking it to the funky instrumental and not relenting in his energy even for a second. Where he lends his smooth voice to more of an RnB context here, he backs it up with a different kind of energy on 'Vultures'.

Where the instrumental on 'Vultures' is both dreamy and wavy, Genesis Owusu's vocals match the mood with a drawling vocal melody and a light flow that never once feels sharp, but simply goes with the flow.

The split release sees Genesis Owusu furthering the scope of sounds explored by him and taking it all just that little step further into territory that he's damn well owning right now.
