Live Review: daste. serve up experimental lo-funk on 'Myself'

25 April 2019 | 5:02 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

Gold Coast trio DASTE. are edging closer and closer to the imminent release of their debut EP, Palette. Coming to us in May, the EP is set to feature two previous singles in the jazzy, synth-driven 'Thinkin' Of' and a dangerously funky, lo-fi cut in 'Sober'.

They've given us another taste of the record with their new single, 'Myself'. They've taken a different approach to songwriting on this one, stepping further away from convention and deeper into experimental territory.

A warbling Rhodes synth phases in and out of the intro, until the vocals come in with the perfect amount of smoothness to match. A lone guitar is plucked silently underneath the vocals, and then the kick hits. The chorus washes over you like a warm hug, the various instruments all working in unison to create a bright pool of comforting sounds.

The instrumental lays the best foundation for the message of positivity flowing through the lyrics. daste. said of the track:

“'Myself’ encourages others to approach life with a positive, DIY mindset. In the creative industries, especially, it can be hard to break through the fear of being an independent and it’s important to push and support each other’s endeavours. By using a different palette of instruments within each track we do, it feels like we’ve adopted a really broad audience and we hope that myself, and the music we have in stall, can continue to do that.”
