Get to Know: KVKA
KVKA is a name you would do well to remember. At just 17, he shared his debut track, ‘WHO YOU’, which now sits on a casual 4million plays, and he’s been grinding ever since. Fast forward to now and at 23 years old, he’s supported the likes of GZA, REJJIE SNOW, WIKI, KEITH APE and more, he’s setting his sights on bigger goals. Already a name in New Zealand where he got his start after being born in Zambia and being raised in the UK, KVKA has now moved across the ditch to Melbourne and is ready to make this year his.
Coming straight out of the gate in 2020 with a brand new single titled ‘No Lackin’, you can hear that KVKA isn’t here to play games. Teaming up with Leniac to go back and forth with wicked bars, the pair go toe to toe over a bass-heavy beat courtesy of Melbourne mainstays HVNCOQ and DEER. It’s an impressive release from start to finish, ending way too soon but will absolutely have you reaching for the repeat button after just one listen.
Out now via indie hip-hop label Mirage Records, ‘No Lackin’ is tipped to be just the start for KVKA, so we wanted to get to know him better before he takes over the world. Check it all out below and get ‘No Lackin’ into your life right here:
How did KVKA come to be?
I always wanted to make music or be an entertainer. I used to make YouTube videos, I was in scat choir, a rock band in high school and the list goes on.
My sister (Nasalifya) started doing poetry while she was in uni and I was still in high school, I grew a love for the wordplay and the storytelling through that.
What are we talking, vibes-wise?
It’s hard to describe my vibe. I make hip-hop, but I’ve moved around a lot in my life which has given me a broad influence that I try to put into my work. The music I make is based on different moods, it’s made to evoke an emotion from sadness to cockiness and everything in between.
Tell us more about your single, No Lackin?
No Lackin is my reintroduction to music after a brief hiatus that saw me relocate from New Zealand to Melbourne. I wanted to come back strong and with hunger. I think we did that successfully on this one. It features Leniac who is my day-one from NZ who has also found himself in Melbourne. It just came from one of those late nights in the studio and is a taste of what I’ve been working on in this period of downtime.
What can we expect from you in the months ahead?
Music, music and more music. I have no plans to stop any time soon and have more than 3 albums in the bank right now.
Where can we hear more from you?
