Live Review: Asquith brings the heat with new EP, ‘Rave Til Dawn'

Lobster Theremin head honcho Asquith delivers a new EP titled 'Rave Til Dawn', which serves to reminds us that someday soon we’ll be doing exactly that.

London-based DJ and producer, Asquith, returns with his latest weapons-grade EP titled ‘Rave Til Dawn’.

Asquith is the solo project of Jimmy Asquith, head honcho at one of the UK’s most prolific underground labels, Lobster Theremin, with releases from the likes of DJ Seinfeld, Sweely, Ross from Friends and Australia’s own Andy Garvey. After the success of his own world tour and ‘Let Me (Rave Mix)’ release last year, Asquith is quickly becoming synonymous with gritty, big room techno, inspired by his Northern roots.

The first single and titular track pays tribute to the 90’s rave sound that has been making an emphatic comeback, coupling nostalgic piano stabs with huge acoustic breaks and a rumbling, warped kick that would send crowds bonkers. ‘Rave Til Dawn’ would slam equally as hard in a secret warehouse at 4AM, a heaving house party with the lights turned down low, or even when getting down alone in your bedroom wishing COVID-19 was over.

The three remaining tracks, ‘Down’, ‘Crush’ and ‘LCD Steppin’ all show equal promise to the opener, with ‘Down’ and ‘Crush’ delivering peak time four-to-the-floor heaters, whilst ‘LCD Steppin’ delves deeper into expansive, speedy breakbeat and junglist vocal samples, hitting a tasty 155 beats per minute. Even the vintage EP art (by James Lacey) evokes the excitement of digging out a hidden gem at your local record store that Shazam wouldn’t recognise.

It’s refreshing to see artists still announcing music designed for old-school, late night raving considering the circumstances under which we currently live, and Asquith’s ‘Rave Til Dawn’ reminds us that someday soon we’ll be doing exactly that.

‘Rave Til Dawn’ is available for pre-order now and releases on the 15th of May both digitally and on vinyl 12”.
