Charli XCX shares garage-influenced new single ‘i finally understand’
Is CHARLI XCX the most productive artist in isolation at the moment? The quarantine queen is gearing up to release a brand new album this month, made entirely while in self-isolation and has now returned with a third new single in a matter of weeks. Titled ‘i finally understand’, this latest release sees Charli channel some garage influences and serves as an ode to her boyfriend.
According to Rolling Stone, Charli said in an interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1, “The song is basically about [how] me and my boyfriend are quarantined together during this time.”
“I’m conscious that I’ve spoken about this a lot and I don’t want people to be like, ‘Shut up about your boyfriend.’ [But] I’m writing about what I know, and we’re quarantined together, and our relationship wasn’t in a brilliant place prior to quarantine. I’m not going to say at the end of the road, but close to it — we were living on separate sides of the country, and even though we were physically far apart, we were emotionally quite distant as well.”
Detailing the impact quarantining together has had on them in a positive manner given that they are now living in the same house, she explained, “I finally understand that this person is somebody who I can trust with my life and I will have my security and protection at the front point of their heart no matter what. So that’s what it’s about, very emo.”
‘i finally understand’ is the third single taken from Charli XCX‘s forthcoming how i’m feeling out May 15th. It follows ‘claws‘ and ‘forever’, and the entire record has been made collaboratively with Charli‘s friends and fans. Listen to ‘i finally understand’ below:
