Mark Ronson shares new single ‘I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight’ ft Raissa
Mark Ronson has shared a new single, teaming up with Raissa for a cover of the 1974 song ‘I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight’. Recorded during lockdown, it’s a cover from Richard and Linda Thompson and taken from their album of the same name.
Sharing the news of the new single on Twitter, Ronson wrote, “I bet everyone here has a song (or two, or fifteen) that they’ve been rinsing during this period.
“In the first few weeks, one song I couldn’t stop listening to was ‘I want to see the bright lights tonight’ by Richard and Linda Thompson. for me, it’s the ultimate song about a messy weekend night out. All the weird but wonderful human interactions that go down. Not knowing what might happen once you head out that front door. Maybe a little hookup, a good time, even a hint of danger. But whatever it is, you know you’re going to forget about the boredom and stresses of everyday life for a few hours.”
“I imagine the reason I’ve been so drawn to this song is because I miss that all very much, I bet a lot of us do.”
Ronson then detailed how the song came about, saying he showed the original to Raissa (who is a new signing to his label, Zelig) who returned a vocal track within just a few hours.
To complement the song, Ronson reached out to fans for some accompanying visuals. People from all around the world sent in videos and photos of their views at night, and these were compiled into an emotional clip. “[T]he your footage started to come in, and it was beyond anything we could have hoped for. So much emotional depth, humanity, humour, love and universality,” Ronson said.
