Live Review: DJ Boring delivers on stunning 'Like Water' EP

19 June 2020 | 9:06 am | Parry Tritsiniotis

It's no surprise DJ Boring is on top of the world, and with the release of his new EP, 'Like Water', he's not going anywhere.

Momentum is an understatement for DJ Boring's run across 2019 and 2020. Touring a live set throughout the globe in 2019, a triumphant homecoming through in March as one of the headliners of Pitch Music & Arts Festival and Days Like This Festival, being the resident on Triple J Mix Up through March, livestream sets for Beatport and of course providing a prestigious Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1, it feels like Tristan Hallis has done it all. The golden run continues with his most ambitious and strongest additions to his discography yet on his new EP, Like Water. It's the first contribution to his catalogue in two years, and the EP is out now via Ninja Tune imprint, Technicolour.

Made between studios in London and Devon, the tracks were originally produced as a part of his 100% self-produced live shows. The excitement from his fans encouraged Hallis to release the music out into the world. The live stage as an influence is one that the project wears on its sleeve. An array of clashing moods creates a big room sonic extravaganza, ready-made to sound gorgeous on a set of loud speakers.

“Having seen people's reactions to the show I’m really excited to release these tracks out into the world for real”, comments Hallis.

The track list is one of significant diversity. The title track 'Like Water' sees colourful synth lines build towards an all encompassing dream-like state. As all the elements combine, the bass line is in full force and the kick-slapping percussion stands as the highlight. We then move into what is a personal standout in 'Another Day'. Long build ups, a ringing synth line and deep kicks create a moody banger perfectly suited for a sunset festival slot. The track's brevity gives it a unique feel, as it ebbs and flows in energy and tone. Similarly, 'Stockholm Syndrome' builds as a punchy, melodic number. The track combines carefully curated pads and a wonky synth line to create textural heaven. As the track grows a sense of euphoria builds, transporting listeners deep into the engine room of Hallis' sonic world.

The visuals reflect the personality fuelled tracks perfectly. Created by Amir Jahanbin, DJ Boring comments, “I wanted to find an artist that would integrate colour and fun into my set. I found Amir and instantly resonated with the colours and figures that he had created. His bright pixelated animations worked perfectly with my music.”

It's no surprise DJ Boring is on top of the world. His honest approach to songwriting and DJing has led to him being on of the most in-demand underground producers on the planet. From his humble beginnings writing in his Melbourne bedroom to the mainstage at AVA Festival, the only way is up for DJ Boring.
