Live Review: PREMIERE: GUARD offers up a vital reminder to look after your mental wellbeing with 'Wine N Die'

4 June 2020 | 11:01 am | Emma Jones

South African born, Melbourne based artist GUARD is back with another single this week titled 'Wine N Die'. Taken from his forthcoming album out 26th June, The Identified Patient, 'Wine N Die' follows on from his recent single 'Gaslight' just a couple of weeks ago, and further peels back the interesting, vulnerable duality he explores with his music.

Almost too relatable, the video for 'Wine N Die' shows GUARD on the quest to capture the perfect pic for Instagram but while doing so, absolutely self-destructing. It plays into the common notion of things not always being like what they seem on social media, and that sometimes behind the perfect pic is someone falling apart. Paired with his RnB/pop leaning vocals and delicate, crisp futuristic bass production, its a somber reminder to not fall into the escape that social media can provide and to keep your mental wellbeing a top priority. Given the state of the world right now, we're sure many could use this reminder.

According to GUARD, he said of the track, "Wine N Die is a look behind the scenes of me trying to look cool online while secretly self destructing. I think we all to a certain extent use social media to portray a heightened version of ourselves. Its offers an escape from this apocalyptic situation. But it’s important to keep your habits in check & look after your mental well being... you don’t have to pretend to be okay like I have in the past."

Director Gianfranco Svagelj said, "This is our third project together and I’m excited because there is no better time frame for this to be released as so many of us not only are struggling with this pandemic and being stuck at home, but also dealing with the ups and downs of social media and the effects it can have on our moods, feelings and mental health”
