Live Review: Tame Impala releases remix of 070 Shake's 'Guilty Conscience'

24 July 2020 | 11:34 am | Emma Jones

Tame Impala aka Kevin Parker is one of the only producers that would do a 070 Shake remix justice and he pulls it off in style.

After just celebrating the fifth birthday of his third album, CurrentsTame Impala has released a remix of none other than 070 SHAKE's 'Guilty Conscience'. The song is the lead single off 070 Shake's very excellent debut album, Modus Vivendi, which was released in the very early days of 2020 and despite it receiving little love here in Australia, is definitely one of this year's best. It is only fitting then that one of our best would lend his remixing hand to one of the record's many highlights.

070 Shake rose to fame thanks to her involvement with Kanye West's 'Ghost Town'. Signed to his label, she's garnered a loyal following thanks to her exceptional vocals and her ability to distill raw emotion into sophisticated, considered RnB. If anyone was going to remix this song, it would have to be someone capable of building on the already brilliant original, which Kevin Parker has done. A Tame Impala remix is a rare affair, with all of his offerings offering a distinct take on its original while being able to exist on its own as well. On this remix, Parker uses heavy vocal effects to amplify 070 Shake's vocals and pairs this with a muffled, trudging drum line. Employing some now trademark-swirling atmospherics, it's an understated but fitting rework. Clocking in at only 3:30, it could easily be expanded into a sonic odyssey of 'Let It Happen' proportions, but Parker uses his impeccable knack for restraint to keep you hooked and wanting more.

It's been a busy few months for Tame Impala, following on from the release of The Slow Rush at the start of the year. As of right now, Parker and the gang are meant to be touring Australia in December for their already-rescheduled-once national tour. So while we hope this is still going ahead, if it doesn't because of the pandemic, at least we have plenty of Tame Impala gems to keep us company until then, and this now includes this very special remix.
