Live Review: Agung Mango just released one of this year's best hip hop tracks

26 August 2020 | 9:18 am | Emma Jones

Quickly becoming one of this year's most exciting breakout stars, Agung Mango is now three for three with his electrifying new single, 'Little Bum'.

Having first exploded onto our radar back in 2019 with 'TOUGHSKIN', and then again in February with 'RODENT', AGUNG MANGO is back for more with new single 'LITTLE BUM'. When he released 'RODENT', we hailed him as "one of the most exciting artists coming up right now," and now with his third effort, he's indeed confirmed our thoughts that there is something special going on here.

In a time when there is an overwhelming number of rising rappers all vying to cut through the white noise of everyone else, it takes a lot to stand out. What makes Agung Mango do exactly this is how unbounded, unapologetic and unbridled he is. Pushing his sound to the limits, he's fearless when it comes to erratic, frenetic beats and in fact is at his best over production others wouldn't dare take on. He raps from experience, but keeps things authentic with his self awareness, and knows how to write some serious bars that have put every other rapper in the country on notice. On 'LITTLE BUM', he taps into this once again, reflecting on a tale of a rapper just starting to break but still having to prove to those closest to him that his chosen path is a worthy one.

Produced by 'RODENT'-producer and frequent collaborator DoloRRes, we get right down to business with the anarchic energy immediately evident from the first distorted beat. Mango moves effortlessly between flows, holding your attention as he moves through the many different parts of the song, jam-packing as much as he possibly can into not even three minutes. It's weird and wild, and showcases not only his ambitious drive which he utilises to create such an electrifying track, but also his versatility.

Channeling the likes of Denzel Curry while still holding true to his own genuine sound, Agung Mango infuses experimental rap, punk, jazz and alternative R&B to create something that is in a league of its own. While many others scramble to follow trends and bite styles of those who have come before them, Agung Mango manages to forge his own path, and now with three for three under his belt, we're predicting even bigger things to come.
