PREMIERE: Poppongene’s ‘Futures Unsure’ EP is beautifully reimagined on this glorious remix stream
Indie pop force Poppongene (real name Sophie Treloar) graced us with the long awaited release of her debut, Futures Unsure, in July of this year. An impressive body of work, it’s a potent mix of emotional and heartfelt indie with enough pop sensibilities to have you humming along for days after its finished. Deeply personal yet entirely relatable, she manages to distill all that it is to be human with soaring highs, devastating lows and the weird flux in between. Exploring the confusing, tumultuous, noxious and ultimately liberating period after a break up, Poppongene‘s Futures Unsure is a blissful body of work that assures you its okay to not be okay, and it’s okay to not have all the answers.
Since the EP’s release, she’s been busy breathing new lives into her songs by tapping some of her friends to remix the songs. We’ve already heard from Sunbeam Sound Machine and his rework of ‘I Can’t Be What You Need’, as well as Market‘s take on ‘Already Gone’. Now, we go one step further with the stream of the full remix EP, premiering on Purple Sneakers today. With offerings from Dianas, Snowy Band, Bonnie Knight and Good Morning, the full release is a carefully curated new life of an EP that already had so much to give.
Poppongene said of the EP, “It’s so refreshing to hear the songs from Futures Unsure reimagined by all of these talented sweethearts. They’re all so unique and I can hear pieces of each artist in all of them. It was a really fun collaboration project to complete while in isolation and made me feel more connected to my friends and my community.”
We always love listening to remixes that manage to dismantle its original and rebuild itself as something entirely different, and that’s exactly what we have over and over again with this EP. Each rework has so much love and care attached to it, respecting the fragility of its original song and honing in on whatever it is that drew the artist in in the first place. A similarly blissful body of work compared to that of Poppongene‘s EP, this remix EP is something seriously special. Listen below:
