Live Review: Sleep D unleashes two heavy hitters with 'Freak Of Nature' EP

22 September 2020 | 11:40 am | Emma Jones

Sleep D follow up their May EP with a brand new two-track release, out now via Butter Sessions.

After the release of a new EP back in May, Sleep D return this month with two more tracks to lift us out of our pandemic blues. Titled Freak Of Nature, this new EP also comes in the form of a 12", out now via Butter Sessions.

Kicking off proceedings in style, 'Freak Of...' sets the scene with pulsating, electro-tinged techno. Using the Roland Jupiter 6, Super Juipter and TR-09, it's a track of epic proportions and a complete masterclass in the kind of entrancing techno sounds we've come to know and love from Sleep D. Fusing together very nicely is 'Nature', the perfect complement to 'Freak Of...' in its retrospective, 1990s/early 2000s hallmarks and equally entrancing yet propulsive production.

If you're listening to this and experiencing a deep yearning for packed dancefloors and loud soundsystems, you probably aren't alone. Both new releases from the duo featured in their sets over the 2019/20 summer, so they are custom made for whipping up crowds into frenzies. Sleep D said, "[W]e were bangin these out in our live sets over last summer so you may sniff out some of that outdoor atmosphere we’re all craving right now."

An extrapolation of the acclaimed sounds we heard on their Australian Music Prize-nominated 2019 album, Rebel Force, Sleep D continue their sonic evolution with this latest release, adding another rich layer to their already impressive catalogue. Complete with artwork courtesy of graphic artist, Ed Davis (co-founder of streetwear brand Brain Dead), Freak Of Nature is just what the doctor ordered. You can grab the 12" plus some special merch right here, and peep the brand new video for 'Freak Of...' below.
