PREMIERE: MAWiE and Dau Dau bring their powerful new collab to life on ‘Still Alive’
Last month, South Sudanese-born, Brisbane based artist MAWiE returned with his latest single, ‘Still Alive’. Worlds apart from the turn up anthem ‘Last Night’ we premiered in July, ‘Still Alive’ sees MAWiE grapple with the state of the world and the experiences he, his family and his friends have all shared with racial prejudice and police brutality. Tapping fellow rising star DAU DAU of the Swish Music crew, the pair held nothing back on ‘Still Alive’, channeling their own stories into the song over a booming beat. Now, they’ve gone one step further and have brought the track to life with a brand new video which we are thrilled to be premiering today.
Filmed in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley and surrounding areas, the two bounce off each other on top of their city, delivering powerful performances on urban rooftops. The clip is interspersed with footage from the recent Black Lives Matter protests, bringing the song’s message to the foreground and adding a deeper sense of poignancy for what MAWiE and Dau Dau are opening up about.
MAWiE said of the song, “Racial discrimination has always been a major problem in the world, particularly with the African-American police shootings that’s been going on in the USA. “Still Alive” was just a piece of what I could write to encourage others to help spread this movement that “Black Lives Matter”. I could really understand how some of my brothers and sisters in USA could feel right now, if not the whole understanding maybe just a figment of that feeling. So I encourage anyone who listens to this song to bring awareness and help in someway.”
Two rappers coming together on a song that not only matches the already high bars they’ve set for themselves this year, but provides a vital message we all need to hear, ‘Still Alive’ is a must-listen — and now a must-watch.
