Excuse me but Sycco just delivered one of this year’s best Like A Versions with a PNAU/Tame Impala mashup
One of this year’s most exciting breakout stars is Sasha McLeod, professionally known as Sycco. From her early 2020 single ‘Nicotine’ to her sensational ‘Dribble’ which followed it, she’s made a name for herself thanks to her psych/pop/indie/soul hybrid of a sound which many can’t get enough of. Just last week, she released a cover of PNAU‘s ‘Solid Gold’ as part of the third Deadly Hearts compilation, and now she’s gone one step further and covered another PNAU hit for triple j‘s Like A Version, delivering one of this year’s very best performances for the segment.
Taking on their 2008 smash ‘Embrace’, Sycco and her band (as well as BV’s courtesy of fellow Brisbane royalty Clea, Asha Jefferies and Halle, as well as Jasper from First Beige on percussion), absolutely tear through the track, spinning it on its head to give it a thoroughly modern makeover. The original still holds up and speaks to PNAU‘s ability to create timeless dance classics, but this Sycco version absolutely holds its own as well. With euphoric hooks, added soulful textures courtesy of McLeod’s impeccable vocals and glorious harmonies, it almost feels like it couldn’t get any better — until it does thanks to an injection of Tame Impala‘s ‘Breathe Deeper’, lifted from his 2020 record The Slow Rush. This Like A Version also comes as part of the station’s NAIDOC week celebrations, a week Sycco has also been busy with a live performance on TikTok also earlier this week as well.
A testament to the talent from a star well and truly on the rise, Sycco has delivered the goods with this Like A Version which has quickly become one of our most favourites yet.
