Julien Baker recruits Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus for new single ‘Favor’
The three members of boygenius have reunited again, this time with Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers provided backing vocals for Julien Baker‘s new single, ‘Favor’. The trio of friends have reunited multiple times since the release of their brilliant 2018 EP, most recently with Dacus and Baker jumping on BVs for Bridgers‘ ‘Graceland Too’ from her 2020 album, Punisher. Once again, the three prove they are an unbeatable combo with their heavenly harmonies combining to create a truly special moment with ‘Favor’.
Lifted from Baker‘s forthcoming album, Little Oblivions, out February 28th, Dacus said in a press statement that this song was actually recorded on the same day ‘Graceland Too’ was — as well as a song for herself as well.
Dacus said, “We sang on Favor in Nashville the same day we recorded vocals for Graceland Too and a song of mine. That day had the same atmosphere as when we recorded the boygenius EP. Making music was just a natural result of being together, easy as can be but also rare in a way that feels irreplicable. I love the song for its stark but sensitive picture of friendship, what it looks like to recover from broken trust. Makes me think about how truth only ever breaks what should be broken, and how love is never one of those things. I’m always honored to be brought into Julien’s life and music.”
Bridgers also offered comment, saying, “Julien is one of those people whose opinion you want to hear about everything. A true critical thinker with an ever-changing and ridiculously articulate worldview. Her music changes in the same way, and this record is my favorite thing she’s ever done. I’m sure I’ll think the same about the next one.”
With powerful lyrics, a tender approach and an innate sadness, its a forlorn and melancholic affair on ‘Favor’. Baker‘s lyrics are poignant, landing gentle but devastating blows with each line. “How long do I have until I’ve spent up everyone’s good will?” she asks, with her friends harmonising with her, the three of them standing side by side as they approach the abyss before them. Sure to be one of this year’s finest records even though it’s only February, this Julien Baker album is not one to miss.
