Live Review: Tkay Maidza and Yung Baby Tate link up for explosive single 'Kim'

4 February 2021 | 1:05 pm | Emma Jones

Tkay Maidza has unleashed one of her best singles yet in the hard-hitting 'Kim', teaming up with Yung Baby Tate for the fierce new hit.

"Last Year Was Weird" might be the name of the multi-part body of work from Tkay Maidza, but in reality last year was easily biggest year yet, and judging from her brand new single and video, 2021 is already looking to eclipse the last twelve months again. Experiencing a stratospheric rise, the ARIA & BET nominated force majeure is back with 'Kim' today: an explosive, incendiary hit with none other than Yung Baby Tate, which doubles as one of Maidza's best releases ever.

Tkay has openly and ambitiously embraced the artform of the music video, and she now has a catalogue of exceptional clips under her belt (see 'You Sad', 'Don't Call Again' and 'Shook' for starters). This release is no expection with the 'Kim' video seeing her embody three iconic Kim's: Kim Possible, Lil Kim and Kim Kardashian. Switching between the three, Maidza is seen working in a lab Possible style, in Lil Kim's iconic 1999 MTV VMAs look and re-enacting Kardashian's Paper Magazine cover among other scenes. Joined by Yung Baby Tate as Kim Possible antagonist, Shego, it's a visual and auditory extravaganza you will want to experience over and over and over again.

Maidza said of the new single, “The idea for the song came from Kim Possible, an iconic figure in my childhood - she always came out on top. I thought why not make a song to remind those who question me that I will always figure it out like Kim. From there when we starting planning a video we thought why not recreate iconic moments from other iconic Kims, across generations.”

Once again displaying her impressive versatility, Maidza delivers rapid fire rhymes over grimy, skittering beats, and lands every bar with precision. It's fierce, powerful, bold and utterly captivating, and shows even despite her great success so far, we've still seen nothing yet. 2020 saw Maidza elevate herself to the leading force in hip hop in Australia and make even more of an impact overseas as well, featuring in leading music and fashion outlets as well as picking up an ARIA nomination for Best Soul/RnB release for Last Year Was Weird Vol. 2. Hinting that there's plenty more in the bank, we are absolutely here for Tkay taking this year for herself as well! 'Kim' once again proves there's no one doing it like Tkay Maidza. Watch below:,
