Live Review: Jamaica Moana presents powerfully with new single, 'CYA'

25 January 2022 | 4:20 pm | Parry Tritsiniotis

Jamaica Moana has released her newest single, 'CYA', an unapologetic, fierce take on contemporary hip-hop, alongside signing to new label.

Jamaica Moana has today released her new single, 'CYA'. The Eora/Sydney based rapper, creative director, songwriter and artist off Māori (Ngāpuhi/Tainui) and Samoan descent has made a fiery debut to her new signing to Pointer Recordings Record label.

Moana has been a distinct figure for years now, with her explosive 2018 debut single 'FUR' becoming cemented as a queer community anthem. Sje is also known and celebrated for her 2019 Stereogamous (Paul Mac & Jonny Seymour) collab 'Just Like This'. She's also the co-founder and host of ballroom event, The West Ball, and has spoken at TEDXSydney, performed at Mardi Gras, Naarm's Midsumma Festival and Dark Mofo.

'CYA' is a fierce take on contemporary hip hop. Featuring banging bass lines, industrial electronic production reminiscent of smoky, lit dancefloors, the abrasive, Dad's Mayo produced beat allows for Moana to take total vocal command. She delivers a top line with unapologetic swagger and self assured confidence, gliding over the glitchy, swaying beat.

Speaking to the release, Jamaica shares, “'CYA' explains the message of me staying firm to my independence. It speaks on the experience of myself holding a leadership position to many people.

"Hip-hop fans will love this beat, infused with the fire vocals recorded on this track. In collaboration with producer Dad's Mayo, we bring you ‘CYA’.”
