'Heartbreak High' Renewed For Third & Final Season

Heartbreak High is being renewed for a third season; however, production pairing Fremantle Australia and NewBe have confirmed that season three will be the last in the saga. It's time to break out the tissues. 

Based on the original show from the 90s, this era’s Heartbreak High focuses on the interweaving lives of the students at Sydney’s Hartley High School - a nesting place for togetherness (and a bit of turmoil).

While season one introduced us to the protagonist besties Amerie and Harper and their bout of school rumours over sex and home lives, season two raised the stakes as Harper moved in with Amerie to flee her troubled upbringing and Amerie faced a new enemy known as ‘Bird Psycho’. 

Season two would go on to become #1 in Australia, making it one of Australia’s Top 10 performing TV shows on Netflix after its release in April. Meanwhile, the show nabbed one of the top spots in English TV series globally for three consecutive weeks and charted in 53 countries. 

Apart from the slightly younger Aussie shows H2o Just Add Water and the beloved Bluey, Heartbreak High is seeing success worldwide in the category of adolescent entertainment, unlike anything we’ve ever seen as a global export.

This hype has also been great at spreading the gospel that is Australian music, with artists such as Miss Kaninna, Courtney Barnett, King Stingray, and the iconic Nollsie making the cut, as Purple Sneakers revealed last month.

The show has also been popular in spreading Australian slang to the masses, with terms such as “Gatho,” “Have a yarn,” and “Bin chicken,” as well as the iconic “Eshay” pig Latin. What a culture we have here…

While seasons one and two of the reboot followed the Hartley students through their year 10 and 11 schooling experiences, season three is set to uncover the final year, producers say. 

“We are beyond excited to all come together again as we love existing in the craziness of Hartley High,” Fremantle Head of Scripted Carly Heaton said in a statement. “We aimed to create a show where Aussie young people are seen and heard, and we are completely overwhelmed by the worldwide reaction to the stories of these characters.

“All of us who work on the series are grateful to have the opportunity to see what kind of mess evolves in season three.”

After that (literally) explosive ending, fans have been in frenzies over the letter meant for Amerie. Netflix Director of Content Que Minh Luu addresses this for the new season:

“She never got the letter, but now we get to see what happens next! Renewing Heartbreak High for its final season is a major point of pride for us at Netflix.
