Australian experimental electronic pop duo DeepFaith released their new EP, GLORIA IN TUMULTU, VERITAS IN FRAGORE PROPHETUS INSANUM, last Friday (with a special pink vinyl edition released on Record Store Day). Today, they join Purple Sneakers for an exclusive track-by-track walkthrough of the release.

DeepFaith is the collaborative project of DANIAL and Byron Spencer.

The former is best known for his work as the drummer for Midnight Juggernauts, founder of Siberia Records, and collaborator with Kirin J CallinanAlex CameronSolange, and Kelsey Lu, while the latter is an acclaimed multidisciplinary artist who has helmed projects for Troye SivanLady Gaga, and Dev Hynes. Their music? As eclectic as their combined rosters suggest.

The EP was led by the wacky, electroclash tune PATTI SMITH, which found DeepFaith on the verge of falling out of affirmation and into narcissist delusion.

Inspired by opening for Genesis Owusu in the US, the EP pulls from punk grooves and camp influences for a release that’s the “aural equivalent of a hand reaching out of your phone screen to bitchslap you and disrupt your endlessly scrolling electronic reverie.”

SUNSHOWERS666

Sunshowers encapsulates a dynamic symphony of motivational fervor, serving as a beacon of self-love and empowerment. Drawing inspiration from the regimented cadence of military drills, the harmonious melodies of chapel choirs, and the whimsical escapades of Mario Brothers, among a myriad of other eclectic influences.

Featuring guest vocals by Kanye, Lyds and Tyler, this was one of the earlier ones we worked on for the EP with Magik Pirate on a warm summer’s day in Tamarama. It came at a time when we were feeling more confident and rebellious within our skins—a loud and proud cry. We thought a bit of our roots in the early 2000s with this and remembered the concept of FUN.

PATTI SMITH

PATTI SMITH is a nonsensical brain dump dedicated to all the spiritual gurus, party monsters, insomniacs and celebrity whores. Serving as a universal anthem, a call to the people. Concluding with a catalogue of affirmative expressions, it elucidates the potential of daily consumption to modulate the brain's reward system, thereby engaging regions pivotal in linking positive stimuli with favourable results.

Byron read from his journal and had a panic attack after doing the one-take. It is a personal reflection and a call of self-help motivation. In many ways, although it is loud on the ears, we hope it can trick you slightly into energetic healing. Neuroscience proves that listening to affirmations daily can rewire your brain, and Patti Smith is filled with them.

MEOWMEOW

Meows meet melodies; cats cavort in cacophonous crescendos, meowling melodies rock reverie. Meow, meow, we chant in chorus, feline punk funk, whiskers twitch. Tails are held high, and paws are purrfect pandemonium. Meowgical resonance, guitars strummed by clawed paws electrifying purrs of power. Meow, meow, the cats declare, a meowsterpiece of the EP.  A feline fiesta, where meow meets melody in a harmonious hullabaloo of rock 'n' roll meowsteria. It’s a pause in the EP. It’s inspired by internet algorithms and memes and features one of the band’s original muses, Zeni.

BBURN

I am not a prize, just a vibe and a concept. Baby Burn It. Hansa Studios West Berlin 1976 -> the new Berlin Trio: Cardi, Eminem, DeepFaith. Bburn is a palette-cleansing moment in the EP; it delves deeper into a layered world of tech and pop culture influence. We worked with Cardi and Eminem, which was a big learning lesson and many hilarious takeaways.

EVERYONE’S TALKING AT ME

Embarking on a hazy 420-fuelled loop pedal tapestry, we tackle a one-take version of Harry Nilsson’s timeless Everybody’s Talkin’.

Surrendering to the process of one take and the pedals. Byron first performed this years ago, and it’s been a nice contrast to side A. It also gives a hint of what’s to come…
