UPDATE 25 July 2023: It’s official: you’re about to see a change to your monthly Spotify bill, with the individual Premium tier rising from $11.99 to $12.99 per month. You can find the new prices here.

We could see a price hike to use Spotify if a new Wall Street Journal report is accurate, with markets across the globe due to follow the US’s lead and increase the cost of the most popular streaming service.

The ad-free tier, Spotify Premium, will reportedly rise by $1 in the US next week. The monthly cost for Spotify in the US is $9.99, up to $10.99.

The monthly cost of Spotify Premium in Australia is $11.99 for an individual account, with a duo account costing $15.99 a month, up to six accounts on the Family tier costing $18.99, and $5.99 for the Student tier.

With cost of living prices increasing everywhere we look – groceries, bills, rent, petrol, you name it – we wouldn’t be entirely surprised to see Spotify pump up its prices.

The Wall Street Journal report suggests that other markets, which may or may not include Australia, will up their prices “in the coming months”.

If Spotify increases prices in Australia, the move will follow Apple Music’s price hike in October 2022.

Apple Music rose by $1 for individual accounts, going from $11.99 to $12.99. Apple Music Family subscribers saw a $2 increase, rising from a monthly cost of $17.99 to $19.99. The company’s television streaming service, Apple TV+, also rose by $2 to $9.99, up from $7.99.

Earlier this week, the Australian leg of Spotify joined forces with Ticketek to launch a live events feed. Shows with tickets sold by Ticketek can now be bought directly through the music streaming service.

Ticketek’s Managing Director, Cameron Hoy, said: “Ticketek is thrilled to be joining forces with Spotify on this partnership. Both organisations are leading global technology and data-driven businesses that exist to connect fans with their favourite artists.

“With this partnership, Ticketek and Spotify will fuel artist discovery and bring fans one step closer to their favourite artists, creating a seamless ticket purchase experience.

“At Ticketek, we believe nothing beats the live experience, and this alignment will ensure Australian music fans have every opportunity to see their favourite artist when they are touring locally.”

In April, Spotify launched new playlists and a talk show highlighting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices. The playlists are Proppa Bars, a hip-hop playlist; a mood playlist called Big Ancestor Energy; and two new kids’ playlists, Too Deadly Bub and Blak Hits For Kids.

The streaming giant also presented the Music + Talk show called OUSS HITS, a behind-the-scenes look at the music spotlighted on its First Nations playlists.
