A pair of events have been announced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip hop in Victoria, taking over The Prince Bandroom in Naarm/Melbourne and The Wool Exchange in Djilang/Geelong.

Officially dubbed 50YOHH (or 50YOHHHHHHH!!!!!: 50 YEARS OF HIP HOP), the Melbourne event will go down this coming Saturday (September 23) while Geelong’s is slated for Saturday October 7. According to the organisers, both shows will feature a roster of DJs spinning tracks “that span the entire spectrum of hip hop's diverse sub-genres”.

The shows aim to celebrate the hip hop’s storied history from the very start – with its underground roots in the early ‘70s – covering everything “from the raw beats of the Bronx streets to the global phenomenon it is today”. The organisers continue: “This electrifying event is more than just a night out – it's a journey through time that honours the rich history, undeniable influence, and groundbreaking evolution of hip hop culture.

“Dance to the iconic beats that have echoed across the streets and airwaves for half a century. Our DJs will spin an electrifying mix of classic tracks and modern hits, ensuring an unforgettable night of non-stop movement.”

While the DJ lineup is yet to be confirmed, we know what to expect of their setlists with a slate of legendary artists said to be spun. Concertgoers will hear everything from Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five, The Sugarhill Gang, Public Enemy and Nas to Missy Elliott, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne and OutKast, right to Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott and Cardi B.

Tickets to both 50YOHH events are on sale now – find them here for Melbourne’s, and here for Geelong’s.
