Sky News Australia First Edition host Peter Stefanovic has been barred from the Chippendale, NSW venue, The Lord Gladstone, for allegedly “using his platform to embarrass and intimidate a child” on national television.

Last Wednesday (1 May), Northern Territory fishing champion Keegan Payne appeared on Stefanovic’s show to discuss hooking a $1 million barramundi. Stefanovic opened the conversation by asking Payne about the alleged theft of two cars over three years ago when Payne was just 16 years old.

Stefanovic’s comments came under fire for spotlighting stereotypes against Indigenous youth.

The Lord Gladstone issued the (joking?) barring notice for Stefanovic on Friday (3 May), sharing a photo of the television presenter with “BARRED FROM THE GLADDY” written across the picture.

The photo is captioned, “[Peter Stefanovic is barred] For using his platform to embarrass and intimidate a child on national tv.

“If a public apology is made we will revoke this decision. If you own a venue and feel just as pissed off as we do, feel free to follow suit and do the same.

“If you wanna defend this gronk in the comments, go for it… any and all engagement on this post is appreciated.”

According to a statement shared by Sky News Australia, Stefanovic made a personal apology for his comments to Payne before publicly apologising yesterday (6 May).

“An apology from me. Last Wednesday, we invited Keegan Payne onto our show to discuss his win in the Million Dollar Fish competition in the Northern Territory,” Stefanovic began on the First Edition show.

Stefanovic continued, “During that interview, I asked him about a theft that had occurred several years earlier.

“I should not have asked him about those claims, and I regret doing so. I apologise sincerely to Keegan and his family.”

The Sky News Australia statement reads (per news.com.au), “Sky News Australia and Peter Stefanovic apologise to Mr Payne and his family for raising these claims during the live interview about his million-dollar win in the fishing competition.

“Mr Stefanovic has reached out to Mr Payne and his family directly to convey his apology.”

Whether or not The Lord Gladstone reverses the barring order is to be seen.
