“Those who choose to do the wrong thing risk spoiling the event for themselves and others, and those who bring illicit substances can expect to be caught and dealt with accordingly.”

NSW police have issued a warning to punters ahead of Splendour In The Grass 2023 kicking off this Friday (July 21), with a high-visibility police operation in place to target “alcohol-fuelled violence, anti-social behaviour and illegal drug use and supply.”

The operation will involve officers from Tweed/Byron Police District, Northern Region general duties officers, the NSW Police Dog Unit and other specialist command support.

The iconic festival, which sees thousands of music lovers from across the country descend upon North Byron Parklands each year, will kick off on Friday, 21 July to Sunday, 23 July 2023 with names like Lizzo, Ruel, Pnau, Peach PRC, Tkay Maidza, Dune Rats, Cub Sport and many more set to bit the stage.

On Wednesday (July 19), NSW police released a statement urging festivalgoers to “look out for their mates” and to think twice before dumping that disco bickie (not in those words exactly, but you get my point).

Tweed/Byron Police District Commander, Superintendent Dave Roptell, said police want to ensure attendees have a “safe and enjoyable festival experience” but noted the consequences of any “risky and illicit behaviour.”

“Police have been working closely with event organisers and stakeholders for months leading up to this weekend’s event, to ensure the safety of all staff, performers and music fans throughout the festival,” Roptell said.

“Those who choose to do the wrong thing risk spoiling the event for themselves and others, and those who bring illicit substances can expect to be caught and dealt with accordingly.”

He added that every punter should “keep an eye on your mates” and not delay in seeking medical attention if needed.

“Drink plenty of water, have appropriate sun protection, and keep an eye on your mates – ensure they don’t wander off alone, and if they appear unwell, seek professional medical attention immediately,” Roptell said.

As well the high-visibility police operation, officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command will also be deployed around the area to “target speeding, drink-and-drug-driving and other dangerous driver behaviour to ensure everyone gets to and from the event safely.”

“We are preparing for a considerable increase in traffic throughout the Byron Shire before, during, and after the festival – particularly on the Pacific Highway.,” Roptell continued, adding, “Our advice is to plan your route ahead of time and check the Live Traffic website for up-to-date traffic conditions and local road closures."

“Officers will be conducting regular roadside drug and alcohol testing; anyone caught driving under the influence will be dealt with seriously."
