Live Review: Pat Carroll delivers a lesson in time & space on his lush guest mix

7 May 2019 | 11:59 am | Caitlin Medcalf

There's something about music constructed by self-found sounds that feels elevated. There's a sense of connection to the artist that's felt that deepens the link between their artistry and their taste. Sydney producer PAT CARROLL employs self-recording techniques from his current PHD studies, as well as his interest in sci-fi themes and novels into his sound.

His latest, 'Plateau', exemplifies his relationship between sounds and his music. He explained "... the sounds I used were mostly field recordings of thunder, hitting pieces of wood together, and the sound of hail hitting my window, to keep a more organic feel with the track. I then structured the track around the gradual breaking down of the vocal loop."

'Plateau' sees him branching out from the cinematic sound explored on his 2018 Conditions EP, and settling in with a delicate palette of shades and textures.

The intimacy of the track explores an evolution of both space and sound, serving some serious Bonobo vibes. To get to know Carroll and some of the sounds he's been both exploring and attributes to his project, we got him to jump on the guest mix for our radio show on FBi Radio.

With four tracks exploring a similar sense of space, Carroll takes us on a sonic journey, finishing up with 'Plateau'. Take a listen to the full mix below, and tune in to Purple Sneakers on FBi Radio every Saturday from 5-6PM to hear mixes like this one. Dial in locally at 94.5FM or DAB+ or stream online at
