Live Review: Freddie Gibbs enlists ScHoolboy Q for 'Gang Signs'

Freddie Gibbs has enlisted ScHoolboy Q for a brand new single and animation-infused video titled 'Gang Signs.

Freddie Gibbs has tapped ScHoolboy Q for a brand new single titled 'Gangs Signs'. Released alongside a video courtesy of Aaron Hymes, the clip features animation based on the work of world-renowned illustrator, Gabriel Alcala and gives the track a surreal visual accompaniment.

Combining film and animation, the clip shows Gibbs and Q as a rabbit and a turtle respectively. The animated animals are super cute, and are later joined by other lil creatures. However, despite their cuteness, the rabbit and turtle mean business as the rabbit drives around with a gun on the dashboard while the turtle rocks out with face tattoos and gold grills. It's a smooth, breezy track with production which juxtaposes Freddie's and Q's raw and real verses of where they came from, just like the animation you watch the critters throwing gang signs.

“I was just trying to pay homage to do or die and bone thugs n harmony when I made this song. That’s the era I grew up on. It was long overdue for me and Q to do a record,” said Gibbs.

'Gang Signs' is the second single Freddie Gibbs has released following his singing to Warner, and follows on from the release of the critically acclaimed Alfredo, which earned Gibbs a well-deserved "Best Rap Album" GRAMMY nomination. Alfredo has largely been hailed as one of 2020's best records, and given he's now partnering with Warner Music, we can probably expect even more from the LA based rapper.
